Pemaquid Point lighthouse 2 Muscongus Bay (same text as Pemaquid 1 - Different pix)
From Newcastle, Maine... driving hwy 130south down the Pemaquid peninsula you come to one of the most scenic lighthouses in North America.
Absolutely beautiful on the Maine rocky coast. overlooking Casco bay... the Atlantic is peaceful on a clear day. Then when you see the rocky coast and realise all the ships that were sailed / driven into and wrecked on the rocks... you understand why the mariners on the coasts / sea meeded the navigational aid of the lighthouses to navigate safely back to anchor in safe harbor.

In 1635 the British ship Angel Gabriel wrecked on these granite rock shores. The strata layers of granite are so unique to walk around... absolutely amazing, but a deadly place through the centuries for many mariners.
On September 16, 1903, while Marr was keeper, the captain of the fishing schooner George F. Edmunds tried to run for South Bristol Harbor in a gale. The vessel was driven by a strong gust into the rocks near Pemaquid Point and was dashed to pieces. The captain and 13 crew members died in the wreck; only two were saved. The captain of another schooner, the Sadie and Lillie, also died near Pemaquid Point in the same storm.
The stone masonry work is really neat. The white paint almost shines looking at the blue sea background. The Fresnel Lens was high technology of the time.
The United States commemorative quarters of each state... When Maine searched for the image to strike on their quarter ; It's this lighthouse.
