Rocky Harbor, Newfoundland 2
Gros Morne national park
Gros Morne National Park encompases all of this area.... meaning the few towns and villages along the coast are there own separate municipal entitiesand the park borders their city limits. While standing on the bay ... looking out over the ocean -- the mountain --Gros Morne-- is a couple miles behind you. ... and mountains surround Rocky Harbor. -- also see other Rocky Harbor posts--
In 1987, Gros Morne national park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its geological history and its exceptional scenery. The geology of the Park in particular illustrates the concept of plate tectonics , and has shed important light on geological evolution and its processes.
This is also a world site for... darkeness.... a huge no-light zone to observe the stars... the heavens.
When the Vikings came from Europe... from their side of the world... they came here. This is the edge of the world! They were here!
Gros Morne mountain is 2, 644' elev and it's mountains are known as the Long Range Mountains range -- an outlying range of the Appalachians. This MARNE journey started in the southernmost Appalachian foothills near Birmingham, Alabama and has been a phenomenal experience to drive the whole length -- 1,500 miles as the crow flies-- to this northern apex.
Driving the whole length of the Appalachan range, up and down the ridges and valleys.... some sideout trips wandering to see some places.... this journey is nearing 3,500 total driving miles to date.
Rocky Harbor is a small town of about a thousand people. It's a quaint village/ resort town as the population swells to visit Gros Morne park in summer.
Beautiful mountains and wilderness, right next to the coast / ocean... a very unique place. Heading out to find the Lighthouse on the point
