Hawk Mountain Sanctuary 52 #197

MARNE 52 #197

August 2012

Deer Lake / Orwigsburg, PA

This journey up to Newfoundland was unique. I've wanted to see the Canadian Maritimes all my life,... to see where the vikings came in from old world Europe to the North American continent. Heading home now back to Alabama we get another treat by stopping to see an old Marine Corps buddy.

Keith and MJ took us up to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary ; an extraordinary place. Years ago hunters used to go here and shoot the hawks,... no more.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the oldest and largest, member-supported raptor conservation organization in the world. In 1934 Ms Edge purchased and set aside this tract of land to preserve the habitat of these birds. ... Thank you !

We walked the trails up to the overlooks and the view of the appalachian mountains is breathtaking. The Appalachian trail runs right through here. Standing on the sandstone outcroppings of the Appalachina mountains.... looking at those wonderful valleys.... This IS a sacred place when you love the outdoors.

There are tote boards that post the most recent sightings of Hawks, Eagles, and other raptors.

Hiking trails with an old Marine Corps buddy... a great day.
