Skyline Drive 4 Shenandoah Virginia

Heading back home now and starting to get excited about being back in the South. There's a peace of going home even though "home" is just a state of mind... an illusion. On this journey up to the Canadian maritimes and Newfoundland... to the edge of the world... the edge of the North American continent... I felt at home traversing through North Sydney, or Norris Point. I was just passin' through; just like back at "home".

Most people think they own a home. ... that they own their home. Own their property / possesions. Truth is, they will leave it all ; ... ALL of it. We only own our illusions. We're just passin' through.

The peace of a journey... I think it's more of the anticipation of completing a journey. There are some places to see on the drive south. I'm not in a rush to go back so I want to spend a few days driving Skyline Drive - southbound- . Skyline Drive is the northernmost leg of the Blueridge Parkway. Same road, this is just the northern end of the drive, and we're heading south back to Alabama.

Travelin' south, heading back home to Birmingham / Leeds, Alabama will take about another week. Travelin' South today. Yesterday got off that god awful traffic I- 81s to wind down through Shenadoah.

This is where a journey gets good. Not neccessarily the place, but the freedom to wander.

Just because you wander doesn't mean your lost.

Skyline Drive is the northernmost leg of the Blueridge parkway -- same road-- this is just the northern part that was sectioned off for Shenadoah National Park. And I like this one better as it's more pristene wilderness than the Blueridge pkway.

Recently I have heard some campaining that government doesn't create jobs. On the Tracks of the StoneBear journey, over a lifetime,... I have seen the stonework cabins, pavillions, roadway guard structures built by the CCC and WPA... built 70+ years ago. Some structures in national Parks like the Northern Arch of Yellowstone built 110 years ago... and they are still being used ... and ENJOYED by all visitors. These structures preserve and ARE our history. We are lucky to enjoy their hard work.

-- Also see Blueridge Parkway post when done-- (Blueridge pkwy, although very beautiful in places... is a "Right of Way" and in places there are homes w/ above ground pools 300' from the roadway)

The Ridges and valleys of the Appalachians running through this part of Western Virginia is known as Shenadoah. Scenic, geography, and past history... a very remarkable place. A wonderful drive!
