Kancamagus Hwy 2 #169

New Hampshire route 112 Kancamagus Hwy

Passaconaway camp Passaconaway : chief in the Pennacook tribe

Tracks of the StoneBear loves driving the backroads / scenic byways of America. The raw pristene nature of the White Mountain range is the StoneBears home.

Driving the backwoods of New Hampshire was wonderfull. Full deep breaths of clean White Mountains air. You could gain weight breathing this air it's so full and rich.

After leaving Bartlett, NH... took the Bear Notch Road to bypass Conway... we're not much for tourist traps and amusement PARKS. There are waterparks ... waterslides... malls for shopping - ugh- and a tourist train for a few hours ride which i'm sure is good ... this is tourist time in the northeast... we try to avoid these places.

Bear Notch Road is really good. Incline up into the mountains. This road is closed in Winter. Descend down a few miles and we come to Kancamagus hwy 112 and turn west. Jigger Johnson camp in the nat forest is full... go on. another mile or so is Passaconaway camp, White mountains nat forest camp for the night.

Now, next morning head west on the Kancamagus Hwy. My regret is we're not a month later to see the Fall foliage colors. This is one of the most popular NH fall foliage drives... one of the best in the world for fall colors !

*** Wikipedia the highway follows the Swift River valley west and climbs to the summit of Kancamagus Pass at an elevation of 2,855 feet (870 m), then descends to the valley of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, which it follows to Lincoln, the western terminus of the Kancamagus Highway ***

This time of year the White Mountains are green... and beautiful. The vistas of the mountain ranges and valleys....magnificent... I am sure the fall colors would be beyond description. I'd like to stay another month and see... but this is the return leg from the Canadian Maritimes and it's time to head back to the South. I should have planned and allowed time to see this in the fall. These views are still good and will nourish your spirit. This is a good drive !
